Golf Buddies Aloud: The Maddening Crowd

A unique perspective on Golf societies and the (often mad) behaviours which typify them...

In the 11 months which have passed since the launch of Golf Yourself Healthy, I have discovered that the art of Golf writing has afforded me some of the most fulfilling and unexpected wellbeing benefits….so much so that I’ve come to wonder whether it’s perhaps even as wholesome as the very act of playing Golf.

Without doubt, writing about my Golfing experiences and sharing my insights with you here on Substack, has been one of the most rewarding facets of GYH (if you’re reading this and you’re not already subscribed, what are you waiting for?!)

Though I already knew how much I loved presenting (for which podcasting scratches the itch), I hadn’t previously realised how much I loved writing too.

Back in June 2024, I happened upon Depeche Golf, a stunningly beautiful magazine, which was presenting Golf in a progressive and culturally diverse light.

Upon connecting with Emil Weber - one of Depeche’s two editors - via Instagram, we struck up an immediate rapport and exchanged compliments about our respective projects. Sensing an opportunity to have my written work published in a leading Golf magazine, I summoned the courage to ask if I could contribute to a future issue.

Met with a positive response, Emil and I agreed to meet via an online chat, together with his Co-Editor, Mark Horyna. Noting that the forthcoming issue was to be themed around Golf and travel, I pitched an idea for a text that focused on Golf societies.

It would allow me to share my experiences of attending trips both domestically and overseas, as well as reflect on the camaraderie and friendships I have formed through my association with these societies.

However, I felt it was important that this text didn’t sugarcoat things. My experience and perspective on societies (which has considerably altered since becoming sober almost 6 years ago) has shown me that, sometimes, these trips can get out of hand quickly, especially when they involve big groups of “lads”, copious amounts of alcohol and the lure of herd mentality.

As such, when writing the piece, I wanted to share my honest and direct opinion, about what we can all do to be more mindful, as well as kinder and more supportive to each other, when partaking in Golf societies.

The end result is “The Maddening Crowd”, which I can proudly share was published in Depeche Golf Volume 2, in November 2024.

I invited both Emil and Mark to be my guests on the GYH podcast, to not only discuss “The Maddening Crowd”, but also to offer my followers a greater insight into what Golf culture looks and feels like in other parts of the world, as well as some more jovial reflections on subjects like Pop Music and Golf Buggies…

I hope you enjoy watching and/or listening to the podcast. More importantly, I would encourage you to visit the Depeche website and purchase a copy of the magazine - you will not be disappointed (I mean with the magazine in general…if I said this about my own text, then that would frankly be rather pompous of me!)
