Season 3, Episode 5: Strength, Resilience and Virtue in Golf - with John Paton

Some Golf brands simply pay lip service to Health and Wellbeing...others, like SRV Golf, wholly embrace it and make it their "why"

In a saturated Golf accessories market - which is often typified by staid brands with no discernible USP, peddling out run of the mill products - SRV Golf dares to think and act differently.

My experience of this industry tells me that, to try and take on the established brands and make a lasting breakthrough, it takes courage and hard work. More specifically, it takes Strength, Resilience and Virtue.

Below the surface of their eye catching acronym and Lotus flower logo, lie these three words, each of which carry deep meaning and purpose.

For SRV’s founder, John Paton, they are the personification of his late mother, Shirley, who acts as the inspiration behind the brand’s creation.

During his Mum’s cancer battle, John was introduced to Golf by a friend and soon discovered it to be the perfect escape. It offered a means of releasing the pressure valve and taking his mind off his mother’s deteriorating health.

Though he was instantly hooked, John acutely noticed that Golf was far from being a cheap past-time.

With his entrepreneurial mindset, he sensed an opportunity. He wanted to launch a Golf business, which would not only honour his mother and everything she embodied, but which would also combine altruism with affordability.

Founded in October 2023, SRV sells high quality, competitively priced Golf products, with proceeds of every sale donated to a selection of handpicked Cancer and Mental Health charities, which are close to John’s heart.

SRV’s mission is clear - to encourage Golfers the use the game as a means of overcoming adversity, whilst giving something back to charitable causes.

In my conversation with John for this week’s episode of the GYH podcast, we discuss:

  • The importance of having a clear purpose: in life, in Golf and in business

  • Inspiring stories of Golfers using the game as an outlet to overcome adversity

  • Remembering Shirley Cant - the inspiration behind the brand

  • The challenges of running a Golf business in a crowded marketplace

  • And much more
