GYH Journal (March edition): The Rise of the Golf Side Hustle
This one goes out to all the hustlers out there...
Those of you with a discerning ear will have heard a subtle, yet familiar theme arise in latest episode of the GYH podcast with our guest, John Paton. That is, of course, the rise of the Golf side hustle.
For those of you unacquainted with such quirky modern parlance, a “side hustle'“ is typically defined as a “job or business venture undertaken in addition to one’s primary job, typically to earn income or pursue a passion project”.
Indeed, if you look back over the three seasons of the GYH podcast, I estimate that around 36% of my guests to date have active Golf side hustles. Set within a wider societal context, it is estimated that in the UK and US more broadly, around 1 in 3 adults have side hustles. You do the maths…
In my case, GYH is (at least, for now) a passion project. Borne out of personal tragedy - coupled with a love for Golf and an entrepreneurial itch which needed scratching - GYH gives me a powerful sense of purpose and serves as a platform to immortalise my late son, Innes.
Yet, for all that I love GYH and the sense of purpose it gives me, it demands a lot time, dedication and effort. Between returning to my full-time job and welcoming my daughter into the world in late 2024, I am finding it challenging to balance my work and family commitments, all whilst keeping GYH afloat.
It therefore feels somewhat ironic that, running a side-hustle brand which is built upon the ethos of promoting Health and Wellbeing, is actually placing strain on the very thing I’m advocating for!
Don’t get me wrong, though. Nothing worth having in life should come easily to us. “Embrace the Rough, Cherish the Fairway” isn’t just a pithy strap-line. It’s a mantra I strive to live by every day. That is, to revel in adversity and to live a life of plentiful gratitude.
I have made no secret of the fact that, in time, I hope to make Golf Yourself Healthy my full-time living. For now, however, my focus remains trained on releasing a regular cadence of high-quality, free GYH content, which offers you (and me) a sense of joy, inspiration and hope that carries over into our game of Golf and our game of life.
If there was one thing you could do to help me grow GYH and spread the word about Golf’s health and wellbeing benefits, it would be to subscribe below and share this article with others, who you think would benefit from my content.
And to all my fellow hustlers out there reading this…keep the faith!
Yours in Golf, Kris
